Ashburn’s APEX 8500 Increases Tool Life 3x When Machining Stainless Steel

October 2022

A family-owned manufacturing shop recently started having issues with a product they had been using for three-four years. Ashburn Chemical was brought in to analyze the operation and recommend a solution.

THE CHALLENGE

Despite troubleshooting, the manufacturing shop continued to struggle with foam issues and coolant splitting in the sump when machining stainless steel, Inconel and carbon steel. These issues lead to frequent downtime, loss in productivity and significant loss in tool life. The manufacturer was looking for a product to reduce foam and help increase tool life.

RECOMMENDED SOLUTION

After meeting with an Ashburn representative, the customer tested Apex 8500 heavy-duty semi-synthetic metalworking fluid. Apex 8500 is excellent for use in difficult metal cutting and metal forming operations. This product worked well for the customer because it does not cause excessive foaming.

THE RESULTS

After switching to Apex 8500 the customer saw asignificant foam reduction. They were also able to increasetool life by 3x on 17-4 stainless steel, 2x on 718 Inconel, and 4x on carbon 1018 and 4130 steel. With increased tool life came higher productivity and increased cost savings.
